Dr. Mark Friswell qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1991, and trained in Pediatrics and Paediatric Rheumatology in the UK and New Zealand. He is a highly experienced Pediatric Rheumatologist having been appointed as a Consultant Pediatric Rheumatologist in Newcastle in 2002, and then moving to Adelaide in 2017.

He is a Former Vice President of the British Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology (BSPAR), and Former Chair of the BSPAR Clinical Affairs Committee. In that role, he was responsible for writing, edited, and then introducing the current NHS England guidance on the treatment of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, as well as overseeing the production and dissemination of the BSPAR National Drug Guidelines.

Dr. Firswell wrote the treatment chapters in the current Oxford Handbook of Pediatric Rheumatology, including the guidance on intra-articular steroid injections. In Australia, he has been an active member of the Australian Pediatric Rheumatology Group, contributing to the recently published standards of Care for JIA.

Dr. Firswell has particular interest in the use of large-scale cohort studies for the monitoring of rare diseases, having been the local investigator for both the Juvenile Dermatomyositis, and Juvenile Lupus registries in the UK.
